Growing Organically After Acquiring a Practice

Goal:

Develop a new practice that would eventually generate $250,000 a year in revenues.  Learn how to use marketing to attract clients, how to sell accounting services and how to develop a practice with respectable profit margins. 

Background :

Curtis attended Build Your Firm’s Level I Practice Development program while working for an existing law firm that wanted to grow their accounting business, as a feeder system for legal services.  The law firm wanted Curtis to develop the accounting practice without spending money.  To acquire the skills and know how, Curtis invested his own money into the Build Your Firm Practice Development Level I program and covered his own travel expenses to Orlando, FL. 

Prior to attending the workshop, Curtis did not know how to market accounting services nor how to effectively sell them.  He was not a natural “salesman” and was intimidated by cold calling and going door-to-door.  To be successful developing a practice, he was worried that he would have to go door-to-door and try to sell write-up and tax services. 

Shortly after attending the BYF Practice Development program, Curtis returned to the law firm and presented his marketing plan and recommendations to develop the accounting practice.  The partners said thanks, but no thanks. 

Curtis quit his job and acquired a practice to get started.  The practice was located in Loganville, GA, about 30 miles east of Atlanta.  After completing the acquisition, Curtis started to implement the BYF marketing system to grow the overall practice and better service the debt. 

Results:

"The results from the BYF practice development system have been absolutely amazing.  Each month, I acquire 2-4 business clients at annual fees of $3,000 - $4,000 per year.  And, the hourly realization rate on these clients far exceeds $300 per hour," said Curtis.   

BYF’s Level I Practice Development program provided me with the ability to market and sell accounting services while staying in my “comfort zone.”  The program went beyond my expectations and I would recommend it to any accountant outside of my local area. 

The BYF marketing system has enabled us to market the practice towards small business clients and draw them to my practice.  Because the clients are expressing interest in our services, that puts me at ease when I ultimately meet with them to understand their needs and issues. 

The BYF program has enabled us to acquire new business clients at very attractive fees and enabled us to dramatically improve our hourly fee realization.  The approach has given me more confidence with each new client and enabled me to be selective in the types of clients for which I am looking.  Based on Allan’s approach to practice management, our practice runs very, very efficiently. 

Even after the workshop program, I will frequently contact BYF with additional questions and advice.  They have been very responsive and supportive.
