Why Lab Coat CPA Narrowed Its Focus to Better Serve Healthcare Professionals
For many accounting firms, growth means adding more services and accepting more types of clients. At Lab Coat CPA, we chose a different path. We narrowed our focus.
Today, Lab Coat CPA specializes in serving dentists, veterinarians, physicians, and other medical professionals. While that may seem like a smaller market, it has allowed us to provide deeper expertise, more relevant advice, and a better overall client experience.
The Power of Specialization
Healthcare practices face financial challenges that are unlike those of most other businesses. From practice acquisitions and equipment financing to staffing costs, insurance reimbursements, compliance, and succession planning, medical professionals require advisors who understand their industry—not just accounting in general.
A generalist CPA who works with restaurants, contractors, and retailers may be highly competent, but they often lack the industry-specific knowledge that healthcare professionals need to make informed financial decisions.
By focusing on dental, veterinary, and medical practices, Lab Coat CPAs has developed specialized expertise that helps clients make smarter decisions, reduce taxes, improve profitability, and prepare for long-term growth.
Why the Name "Lab Coat CPAs"?
The name wasn't chosen by accident.
The lab coat is one of the most recognizable symbols in healthcare. It represents professionalism, precision, trust, science, and years of specialized training. Whether worn by a dentist, physician, veterinarian, pharmacist, or medical specialist, the lab coat creates an immediate connection among healthcare professionals.
We wanted our brand to reflect that same level of specialization.
Just as patients seek specialists rather than general practitioners for complex medical issues, healthcare professionals often benefit from working with accountants who understand the unique financial side of running a practice.
The Lab Coat CPAs name immediately tells prospective clients who we serve and where our expertise lies. As part of our rebranding, we wanted to tell our story and dedication to the broader medical community.
Speaking the Same Language
Working with healthcare professionals means understanding more than tax law.
It means understanding:
- Practice valuations and acquisitions
- Equipment purchases and financing
- Associate compensation models
- Benchmarking overhead percentages
- Payroll and staffing challenges
- Retirement planning for practice owners
- Entity structure and tax planning
- Practice transitions and succession planning
Because we work with similar practices every day, our advice is grounded in real-world experience and industry benchmarks rather than generic business guidance.
Better Insights Through Industry Experience
One of the greatest benefits of specialization is the ability to recognize opportunities that generalist firms may overlook.
By serving clients within similar industries, we identify trends, compare performance metrics, and help practice owners understand how their businesses measure up against comparable practices.
Our clients benefit from proven strategies developed through years of experience working with successful healthcare practices.
A Better Client Experience
Healthcare professionals are busy. They don't want to spend valuable time explaining how their practice operates to a new advisor every year.
Our clients appreciate working with accountants who already understand the terminology, operational challenges, and financial opportunities unique to their profession.
That familiarity allows conversations to move beyond bookkeeping and tax returns toward strategic planning and long-term growth.
Deeper Penetration within Dental, Veterinary and Medical Verticals
While Lab Coat CPAs made the strategic decision to narrow the scope and say no to most business owners, they doubled down on the dental, veterinary and medical sectors.
Dental CPA - Orthodontists to Pediatric Dentistry to Oral Surgeons to Periodontists.
Veterinary CPA - Pet Hospitals to Equine Vets to Feline Specialists to Mobile Vets.
Medical CPA - Dermatologists to Plastic Surgeons to Radiologists to Ophthalmologists.
Lab Coat CPAs works with medical practices, dental practices and veterinary practices nationwide.
The Future of Accounting Is Specialization
As the accounting profession becomes increasingly competitive, firms that develop deep expertise within specific industries are well positioned for long-term success.
At Lab Coat CPAs, narrowing our focus wasn't about limiting opportunities—it was about creating greater value.
By serving dental, veterinary, and medical professionals exclusively, we've built stronger expertise, more meaningful client relationships, and a brand that resonates with the healthcare community.
Sometimes the best way to grow isn't by serving everyone. It's by becoming the trusted specialist for the clients you understand best.
Lab Coat CPA is proud to serve the professionals who wear the lab coat—and the practices that keep our communities healthy every day.
Note - Build Your Firm has worked collaboratively with Lab Coat CPAs and Peter Freuler since 2010 in the Outsourced Marketing Program. During this long run, his practice has flourished and no longer resembles what he inherited from his dad's practice. Peter was in college attending Columbia when his dad passed. He returned home to Orlando and managed to operate the practice by the bootstraps. Ultimately, he completed his degree at UCF and passed the CPA exam. Today, the practice is very different from his dad's practice in every sense imaginable and focuses on dental, veterinary and medical practices under the Lab Coat CPAs brand name. The transformation from 2010 to now is amazing now that the foundation has been established, firm name clearly connects with broader medical professionals, bar has been raised and upside potential is limitless.
