The veterinarian health market has been growing steadily. Pet ownership in the United States is now at 68%, up from 56% in 1988. This growth trend has fueled growth for veterinarians, pet food providers, pharmaceutical providers, and even pet insurance providers.
Today, there are now over 60 million households in the US with a dog and 47 million households with a cat. And the biggest annual expense for a pet owner is veterinarian fees. For a typical dog owner, the annual vet fees are $731, food is $235, and kennel boarding is $322. While the vet fees for a cat are less annually, the top expense is the same answer.
To illustrate how hot this market has become, Blue Buffalo Pet Products was a start-up business started by Bill Bishop, who I met back when he was a co-founder of SoBe beverages. Bill is a successful advertising guy who started the company in 2002 and built it into the leader in "natural" pet food segment. The business exploded in sales to $1.275 billion in 2017. Given the amazing growth of Blue Buffalo, General Mills decided to buy the company for $8 billion in 2018. This should illustrate the upside potential in the animal lover space.
